was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama and later moved to the Chicago area where he attended high school. He began college at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota but completed his degree at New York University. He graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Art History.

Having specialized in contemporary Chinese art, he began his arts career in New York City by writing and speaking on the subject. In January 2007 he began working for Red Gate Gallery in Beijing, the oldest contemporary Chinese art gallery in mainland China. He was named director in 2008, and during his tenure, he wrote two books and over a dozen catalogue essays. He curated many successful exhibitions and edited numerous exhibition catalogues. He lectured on general and specific art history topics at universities, museums, galleries and conferences in Asia, North America and Europe. Beginning in 2009, he also served as Fine Arts Editor of the bilingual Chinese magazine LifeStyle, to which he contributed a monthly arts column.

Tally moved to Bangkok in February 2010 to pursue a Master’s degree at Chulalongkorn University in Southeast Asian Studies, focusing on contemporary art. He speaks fluent English, Spanish and French; proficient Dutch, Portuguese and Italian; intermediate Mandarin Chinese and German; and basic Thai and Japanese.

After graduating with honors from New York University with a degree in Art History, A.J. was accepted into the prestigious Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme and taught English for one year in Fujiyoshida, Japan. She subsequently returned to New York, where she worked as a viewing assistant and client service representative at Christie’s and then as a researcher at Adelson Gallery, where she helped compile the Mary Cassatt catalogue raisonné. She has traveled extensively in Europe and Asia and speaks fluent English and basic Japanese.
