May 1 – 4, 2013,
Tally Beck Contemporary, 42 Rivington Street, New York, NY 10002
Tally Beck Contemporary is delighted to announce that the New Museum has once again invited us to participate in IDEAS CITY, the biennial festival created to explore the future city and to effect change. Formerly known as the Festival of Ideas for the New City, IDEAS CITY was founded by the New Museum as a major collaboration between dozens of downtown arts, education, and community organizations to harness the power of the creative community and imagine our collective future. The ambitious initiative is built upon the core belief that arts and culture constitute a driving force behind the vitality of urban centers worldwide. In keeping with this global vision, Tally Beck Contemporary invited Istanbul-based architecture and design firm iyi to develop a project for the gallery. Can Sucuoğlu and Elif Ensari, partners at the firm, developed Istanbul Sidewalk for Tally Beck Contemporary’s IDEAS CITY project. Consistent with this year’s IDEAS CITY theme, “Untapped Capital,” Istanbul Sidewalk will animate the gallery space and storefront sidewalk Turkish style, replete with a semaver of tea and tavla (backgammon) boards. IDEAS CITY runs from May 1 to 4.
The project will be open during regular gallery hours, 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 1, to Saturday, May 4. There will be an opening reception at the gallery Wednesday, May 1, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. On Friday, May 3, the gallery will host its regular monthly LGBT cocktail party in the space from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm with the project as the backdrop. On Saturday, May 4, from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. the project will be part of IDEAS CITY’s StreetFest.
